You're not wrong here. It really does start in the cradle for all of us. If you're not into being a pampered little princess as a young girl, you get shamed and admonished. "Why are you the way you are?" sorts of comments all the time.
"Don't get dirty.'
"Leave that alone, you'll hurt yourself."
"Here. Let me do that for you so you won't get grease on your pretty clothes."
"Let's curl your hair so Daddy will be proud." (like he'd either notice or care — haha).
Boys get the reverse.
You'd be surprised how often it's the same gender parent pushing it or criticizing the opposite gender parent from trying to broaden the kids experience and capabilities too.
My grandmother made sure my dad could cook for himself and wash his own clothes, clean, etc.
My Dad made sure I could change my own flat tire, check and change my oil, check and change a fuse, household maintenance etc.
But that's rare. We were uncommon, in that regard.
