You make the best point of all. In the end, if you are lonely you have to put yourself out there. It's not like there is a shortage of things to do and ways to meet people.

EAA, Civil Air Patrol, bush training/primitive skills training, motorcycle clubs, community theater, scouts, Habitat for Humanity, wildlife rescue/rehab organizations, beach cleanup, disaster relief outreach programs, there's an experimental car builders club I forget the exact acronym for (it's like the EAA but with cars), renaissance clubs, archery clubs, skate parks, bike clubs, rec leagues.
Of course, none of these things are going to come to you. You have to go to them.
Best advice for loneliness and boredom is ultimately going to be the same thing you mama told you. Go outside and play.
