I would love for my country to get out of the middle east. However, it’s insane to think we could just pack up and leave without there being very dire consequences for us and the world.

Trying to maintain stability in that region after WWII redrew the map has been thorny to say the least. Now America is facing a future of possible collapse and/or civil war. If that happens and America steps back from that region someone will have to step in. That’s likely to be China or Russia.

I alternate between feeling very sorry for them and worry. For all the mistakes the US has made in that region, things haven’t gone nuclear. And that’s been good for the world. It’s likely that China or Russia will be more heavy handed. That may not end well. On the other hand, maybe they will respond better to that approach.
