Yep. I'm in the US, but I'm old enough to remember what it was like for my grandmothers and great grandmothers.

I also remember my great grandmother whacking her sons, including my grandfather, upside the head with her marble rolling pin after stumbling upon them congratulating themselves for being selfish with the disposable income and trash talking their wives, our grandmothers and great aunts, in front of us children.

They were raised on a farm during the depression before there WAS any disposable income. If all the children got a new pair of shoes that year, it was a good year. She was shamed to have them be peacocking such selfishness with all that pride. She let them know it too.

Papa was about ready to retire when his Mama corrected his attitude. I was about to start to school. It made an impression.

You are NEVER too old for a living mother to whoop the stuffing out of you if you step out of line and embarrass her when she KNOWS she raised you better than that.
