Yeah, it's funny how you fall into those scripts without meaning to. Even when you're aeare of them and know you don't want them, without an alternate agreed upon plan you're both doggedly committed to (or, all parties involved), you'll slip into it without ever meaning to and too often, suffer the consequences.

I'm truly happy for you both. It's a precious and rare thing to make it the distance and still be friends.
