Yeah, if they get enough roaming exercise and don't get over fed that's what you see and that's what's normal. So farm beagles or beagles that actually get taken hunting regular are usually lean.

It's the ones who get kept as house dogs that usually have a problem. We live in an apt in a city so the beagles we see on occasion are almost all over weight. They get too many high fat handouts and they are notorious about getting into things. I found Jupe on top of the refrigerator helping herself to some blueberry shredded wheat when she was a juvenile. No idea how she got up there. I walk her 4 to 5 miles a day, every day and as I said, we play with her pretty intensely.

It's funny. Those rare instances when we run across other people with overweight beagles, they all say how skinny she is and assume she's been neglected or abandoned dog, or that she's a juvenile dog who hasn't filled out yet. So that's the other side of this story.
