When was the last time you saw a male film hero sacrifice anything for love?
I mean, really?
Sure, we see them facing down death all the time for romantic love but we also know that he's not really going to be sacrificed. It's all performative. He's got to be around to collect his reward, the girl.
Pearl Harbor, Danny sacrificed himself for Rafe. Harry Potter sacrificed himself for his friends, the school, and the wizarding world.
Off the top of my head, that's two where you didn't know the hero was going to survive, prevail, and be rewarded a girl.
This is not the point you think it is.
