What you’re describing isn’t "pick me girl" behavior. Another commenter outlined the difference.
However, you’re right too. Much like the term "Karen", the usage has drifted into a broader misogynistic slur. Ultimately, a word’s meaning is dependent on it’s usage.
Semantics? Yeah, mostly. In this instance though, I think it succinctly captures how we women are often our own worst enemy.
If there’s a way to punish other women we’ll find it, we’ll exploit it, we’ll weaponize it, we’ll deploy it, and we’ll kick back and glorify ourselves while watching the fallout over a bowl of popcorn or ice cream.
Women have ALWAYS been the patriarchy’s most vicious enforcers.
I’ve been accused of flirting or doing "male" things to get attention from men my whole life. Or being a dyke. And so forth and so on.
Truth is, I’m a cis-gender heterosexual female who doesn’t bother with much of gender performance. It’s too much work. It’s uncomfortable. It bars me from things I’d like to do, or try. It’s weird and maladaptive. And I just don’t like the rules. So thanks, but no thanks.
Why do we do this? It’s abjectly idiotic to assign things like outdoor vs indoor, types of games, type of vehicle, particular maker/craft skills to a gender. These are all human activities. It’s even more idiotic to believe that doing so places you above your peers.
It doesn’t. It just makes you look like weak, pathetic, and petty. So I’m with you, let’s just not. There’s no gain for anyone.
