We won't. Covid pandemic was our chance to prove we could. Think about it. It conveniently arrived, almost as a training module, a proof of concept opportunity.
Here we have a disease that is going to spread like wildfire, going to take out enough people that it can't be ignored, but is relatively benign for most people who get it. Further, you don't know if you're carrying it or not unless you get sick or you get tested.
You'd be hard pressed to design a better way to test collective action in an emergency. It was perfect, for that.
And we failed. Miserably.
Before we had belief that we could solve climate change, based mostly on general benevolent feelings about humanity.
But now we have proof that we're both fuck ups and fucked up as a species. We're not going roo so what needs to be done. We're not capable of collective action on that kind of scale. And we're too stupid and self absorbed. We refuse to think ahead and resist sacrifice.
The Egyptians did better.
