True evil is not rare, it’s just usually not concentrated. It’s like a diluted solution that is carried throughout all of humanity. We all carry a share of it.
We’re supposed to keep it contained, keep it in check so it doesn’t manifest into something like the Holocaust.
That’s a good example. It’s easy to blame Hitler for the Holocaust in entirety and there’s a tendency to do that because it leaves everyone else feeling blameless, guiltless. We say, “if we could go back in time and assassinate Hitler, the Holocaust would never have happened.”
But it very likely would have, just under the headship of another sociopath. It’s not like there’s a shortage. And everyone else allowed the evil they carried free reign. Greed, wrath, pride, envy, lust, gluttony and sloth combined in the populace and titrated down into an expression of pure evil.
In the case of your father, sounds like he’s definitely acting with malevolence (evil) because he’s letting pride have free reign. That doesn’t make him evil, or a manifestation of pure evil, but as you say….does it matter? He’s still letting evil have the last word.
