Like most everything, there needs to be checks to keep things in balance or from becoming destructive.

I agree with you about technology being the golden calf. We need to be much more mindful about our technology and most of us need be living much simpler lives. To use a pop cultural example...the B'aku from Star Trek Insurrection. They did not make meaningless technology a part of their daily lives.

It's too late now, but we could have headed toward something like that years ago and been much better off now.
