They've been heavily propagandized. They dont have effective or sound critical thinking skills. They've also been somewhat conditioned.
The smartest and most effective thing Evangelicals did was establish a press and use it for propaganda. The second most effective thing they did was undermine and stifle education.
The third most effective thing they did was "white hat" themselves. I'm talking about the old westerns where the "good guy" wore a white hat and the "bad guy" wore a dark hat. It's an effective gaslight. If you frame yourself someone who has take an extreme position because you just want to help because you care and it's all out of compassion it's easy for the opposition to think you're misguided and overlook the nefarious intent of attempted control. Both within the religion and to those they are proselytizing to and propagandizing.
It's been very effective. There aren't many women cheering the overturn, even amongst pro-lifers. They're shocked, hurt, and feel betrayed at the malevolence in the draconian state laws coming out. They were promised this was about saving babies, not punishing or harming women. They blinded themselves to the malevolence of the alt right in plain sight and are now enjoying a Serena Joy moment. It is the first of many. Hope they manage to keep their digits and eyeballs.
