They're your words, my guy. That's directed at you, the Individual handled Some Guy here on Medium rather than "you" which could mean you the individual but could also be universal 2nd person you.

I did very well in English class. In fact, many of my teachers asked me when I was going to come and replace them so they could retire.

I never wanted to be a teacher. That would have been a waste of my technical skills.

Anyhoo, you (Some Guy) said that when the women showed up they were treated with skepticism and assumed incompetent right off the bat. They had to prove themselves.

Despite your contrary statement now, you did not imply that young men fresh out of college, just like the women were, and coming onto the job had to face the same skepticism of assumed incompetence rather than being marched out the door with a cardboard box after proving themselves incompetent.

Do you not see the difference between hiring a man and a woman who both had to clear an interview and show some kind of inclination and skills to do the job (a resume, a background check, an education, etc) and knowing nothing more about either one of them other than that and giving the man every benefit of the doubt that he is indeed competent without having to jump through extra hoops to satisfy your qualms until he proves himself incompetent to the point of being beyond redemption that people are shoving cardboard boxes under his nose vs a woman who is suspect the minute she walks through the door until she proves otherwise because "we hadn't seen any women in this field before"?

Really?

That's what you're telling me?

So, again, I ask you. Why do you think that is? You know exactly the same about both candidates. They passed a hiring process. One is a man and one is a woman.

You're looking at them both differently, the minute they walk in the door.

How does that make me biased? I don't do that shit. I give everyone at work a hard time equally. I don't care what they look like or what their past experience was. They passed the company's hiring process. It's not my place or my responsibility to tell the company they were wrong based off my preconceived notions. My job is to support my team and make sure they know what they're doing.

My team consistently outperforms all the other teams.

You, Some Guy, clearly observed that overall the department did indeed view them as incompetent based on nothing but gender and bias.

Y'all men don't get to have it both ways. Y'all men don't get to say, "hey, we did observe some bias but that's okay because it was the unfamiliarity of the situation", describe in exacting detail how bias works....

and then say, "but I'm not biased. You're biased."

I will not be accepting that bait and switch today.
