They’re kind of trapped in a GOP version of a classic, The Little Trumpets Who Cried Fraud.
Complaining of fraud before there was any real reason to think there would be was problematic at best. Especially after the 2016 election and Republicans roundly dismissing concerns of Russian social media influence as specious complaints of fraud did not help. There’s a difference. Foreign influence is not election fraud but it is a concern that deserved to be heard fairly too. Look where we are now. More reporting and acknowledgement from defense institutions of cyber incursions.
Failure to present any evidence was not a good way to get people to believe you. Flapping about a stack full of affidavits saying election workers were rude and that there was a dinner delivery as evidence but then failing, again, to present that 'evidence’ where it could be legally scrutinized and verified did nothing but further erode any credibility they might have had. It played like the GOP was the one committing fraud to steal the election. Not presenting that in court actually spared them from crossing a criminal line.
The hearing put together by Guliani was an absolute farce. The so called witnesses were belligerent and came across as complete whackos. The ‘crack’ legal team includes a Qanon nut and Guliani, who seems to have forgotten everything he might have known about practicing actual law as well as being complicit in the affair that led to Trump’s impeachment. Not exactly a team that inspires confidence and and belief of integrity. There’s been a complaint to the bar association that may lead to Guilliani being disbarred.
So now they’re trapped in a situation of their own making and it’s running away from them. They’ve cried wolf so much and so loudly that their actions have actually manifested a different sort of wolf. One they weren’t expecting or thought they could control but in reality is one they may not be able to save themselves from.
Given the equal contempt the far right and the far left have for each other and everyone who doesn’t hold extreme views, I’m unsure why anyone would think there’s anything that should be done but kick back with some popcorn and watch the implosion. Don’t forget how many of us are too busy trying not to starve or lose our homes to give much of a sh*t about anything else.
Let’s all hope the Senate enjoys their holidays.
