There are actually plenty of women who gain these skill sets and have at least a minor interest in them. Spend some time on TikTok. Women love to build and make and create.

I think it’s more likely they’re not pursuing these areas of trade as a profession because

  • they are hostile workplaces to women. The construction worker harasser is a stereotype for a reason.
  • The pay is not sufficient enough to attract young women entering the workforce when compared against all the negatives of going into construction.
  • Work hours for construction often require getting up extremely early to avoid the heat of the day. Like, 3 am early to start at 5 am. Very hard to do with kids. Kids means you have to stay around school hours.
  • In conjunction with the above, places that don’t allow phones at work mean you’re out of contact with your children’s caregiver. That sucks way too much and NO job pays enough for that BS.
  • People who work construction type jobs for 8 hrs typically need more recovery time because of how hard it is on your body, male or female. Again, with kids that’s just not going to be possible unless you have a fully engaged partner picking up the slack. Most women do not.
