That's not their meaning when they say they don't need anybody.

They're saying they're not forced into dependence on someone else to get by or thrive in life because of legal and systemic means that prevent them from full autonomy.

They're saying that if and when they choose to partner with someone, it's because they want them in their life and value their intrinsic qualities, not because they need them for food or shelter, etc.

If you follow that through, you see it for the compliment it is.
