That's because he made a mistake. Sure, it's unfortunate she had to go through that but she's not weak any more so ultimately he did her a favor. And she wasn't really hurt. It's not like she had to be admitted to a hosital because he beat her so bad or anything.

So he's not evil. He's just a guy who made a mistake.

Outside of historical stuff, that's usually how it goes.

In historical stuff, it usually is a lazy plot plot involving a rebuffed or outmaneuvered man who is obsessed with having the woman so he kidnaps her with the intent to humiliate and ravish her. "If I can't have you no one will.". This inspires the "hero" to fonally get his head out of his ass, realizes he loves her, and fight for her in order to win her affection or prove himself superior to the scoundrel. Who usually ends up dead.
