That’s actually not true Gareth. A lot of them play the “woe is me" card. They play the part of the downtrodden man (or woman) who’s been kicked around by life, family, work, the opposite sex. They do this to be attractive to the more empathetic amongst us; they weaponize the Florence Nightingale effect but for supposed emotional wounds instead of physical ones.

If you invest in them and try to build them back up to a normal level of self esteem they’ll eventually wear you out because they’re only ever using you for validation and an endless supply of attention. No one has an endless supply of empathy and caring they can throw into the bottomless pit of hell that is the narcissist’s ego.

These people are emotional vampires. Always taking, never giving. They only ever think about themselves. Classic narcissism.

But your analysis is that the people running from the the vampires to save themselves from being sucked dry is the fault of the person being drained of their life force rather than the vampire who won’t go vegan like a Cullen because they’re just thrilled seeing all the people around them as their own personal Happy Meals with legs? That’s what you’d have us buy into?

Not buying it. I’m not that easily manipulated.
