That's a good insight, and I think you're right. The academic discourse around Anne Frank in school always did seem to me to be a form of penance. Kind of like Sequoyah or Pocahontas. You definitely miss the person with the mythology. Worse, you claim them as your own when they're not white, and they weren't. It's messed up.
