That's a good analogy about the republicans and it gets to the what the hang up really is.

It's the zealotry.

You can't compromise, negotiate, or expect fair play from a zealot. A zealot will even undermine their own self interest to promote their zealous ideology. Suicide rise in men proves that's so.

Most men are zealous about coupling manhood and masculinity to ideas of domination. Sure, they'll candy coat it in a lot of ways but it always comes down to that.

They cannot be forced to change that ideology or even to want to. You can't fix them. You can only reject them for clinging to it and build your life along another path.

Same with MAGA. They're into deep cult crazy. They're not going to give it up. No olive branch is going to work. Only thing to do is reject them in every way possible.
