Key word there is maternal.

You're not exactly born with it just you virtue of being female.

It kicks in with the process of having a child.

Ergo, if you don't have kids, you're not replacing something you haven't yet developed with a social cause.

Maternal instinct is specific. It's not the same as what you see being socialized as a caregiver or being compassionate and empathetic, or even taking care of children from time to time. You don't develop maternal instinct at two by playing with dolls.

The maternal instinct is feral and can be frightening at times.
