Put money in efforts to prevent unwanted pregnancies in the first place. Make it available to everyone. Work on engaging men to take more responsibility of the reproductive process beyond just making deposits.
Really, the problem is not abortion. Abortion saves lives. The problem is abortion being used as a means of birth control because of poor education or unavailability of prevention. So we need to make that distinction in our minds. That’s not the best phrasing there and it has gaps obviously, but you take my meaning (I hope). Sometimes birth control fails and then an unwanted pregnancy happens that has to be dealt with even though people were being reproductively responsible.
Voluntary sterilization. Women have an inordinately hard time getting procedures like tubal ligation if they don’t want children or only want one. Lots of times doctors won’t do it without spousal permission. I don’t think it’s widely available for insurance coverage either, but I may be wrong on that. A one time tax credit or some other incentive to be sterilized may be worth a discussion at least. Vasectomies should be promoted for men as well and assistance getting one made available for those who want it.
Any program that helps families will lead to fewer abortions from women who just can’t afford another child. That includes affordable childcare, education and training, wage parity, etc. Another idea there might be a program that allows for a mini retirement or UBI for one parent until their children are school age. Take a later retirement but have a few years while kids are young.
There’s lots of ideas in that vein that basically amount to taking the pressure off child rearing. It will lead to a lessened desire or need for abortions.
There’s things that can be done beyond demonizing women and making child rearing more onerous. We just need to be willing to sit down and talk it through. And then do the work to make it happen.
