I don’t know about that. I think when you frame respect and dignity around the definition of obligation you’re going to run into all sorts or problems. The word has limits and is not interested in fairness or reciprocity. Respect is meaningless when boxed by obligation. Maybe not completely meaningless, but it loses a lot of value. Forced/coerced respect and dignity via laws and cultural morals/mores leads to resentments and contempt, especially without that reciprocity.
I think we’re seeing that dynamic play out now. Don’t you?
