The same dynamics apply. I doctor can prescribe me a medication or treatment based on his or her experience and best judgement or assessment of my condition or complaint.
It's still completely up to me to follow those directions or not. I can get a second opinion. I can get a third opinion. I can just call him or her a quack doctor and ignore him/her completely, to about my business, and then what happens happens.
My opinions are opinions. I'll be earnest in giving them, but like all opinions they are limited somewhat. The value of them is entirely up to the reader. Same way I evaluate the opinions others put here. If I follow some advice that turns out to be unsound, that's still on me. And that's happened.
