Not really. He's an addict and he admits to being "a beast" when he's high. All addicts are abusive in their addiction. Maybe not physically, though again, he admits to being 'a mean drunk'. But emotionally, financially, etc. In the very best scenario, they're only abusing themselves but that doesn't happen often.
Throwing money around as an 'apology' doesn't erase the abuse. Being the sweetest guy in the world sober doesn't erase it either, especially considering he's hardly ever sober.
His habit is so extreme at this point that if he quit, there's a very real chance it would kill him because his heart gives out from the shock.
Heard was an enabler. There's something similar about the reactive abuse from being worn down in a domestic violence situation and a how addicts wear down, exhaust, and manipulate their enablers.
