Normally, I would agree with you. That’s what happened with Nixon. People of conscience, honesty, and integrity refused to go along. It was them who convinced him to resign rather than put the nation through an upcoming impeachment. They refused to accept his criminal corruption.
Let’s face it, Trump is not the first time we’ve had a President with authoritarian tendencies or that abused the office. Still, as you said, our institutions held because of those oaths.
That was then. This is now.
This time is different. Too many of our institutions have had honorable people who pushed back fired and replaced with people who have pledged mob like loyalty to him and are so woefully incompetent that our institutions are crumbling under the strain.
This time he has a cult following in his base which has made going along preferable to fear of possible political backlash. They’ve chosen to protect their office over honoring their oaths.
I just don’t have the confidence of high officials I used to. Too much has gone unchecked. Too many have turned a blind eye, done a 180°, or just stuck their heads in the sand. It gives me no pleasure to say; actually, it breaks my heart. I love this country and I’ve ached for it the last 4 years.
Jesus. Of all the qualified candidates who put their name out in 2015 for election, why in God’s name did the GOP ever entertain that hack?
