No. That not what I meant. I understand that the law will not affect the pregnant woman ‘directly’ with the bounty aspect. The suit isn’t against her. That bit is pretty plain and has been bandied about more than enough.
No. What I’m talking about is who going to get hit with these lawsuits. Most people are talking about how some poor innocent man is going to be swept up in an abortion dragnet for giving a pregnant woman an UBER ride. Or some guy is going to loan a friend some money and then be sued because she used it to get an abortion. The discourse is all about how men have unwittingly signed up for unnecessary hardship.
But let’s follow that train of thought out to it’s logical conclusions. I’ll stick with 2 main points; there are more but we’ll stick with 2.
You’re a woman. If you need an abortion, who do you go to for help? The boyfriend/husband or a trusted female family member or friend? Statistically, most men who cause problem pregnancies never know. They have the luxury of being almost completely divorced from reproductive responsibility. So much so that most women, young women in particular, report extensive difficulty in getting them to wear a condom.
If you’re a woman, you know this is true.
So now, by this law, asking for help endangers your friends and family. Most women are not going to risk their families and friends. It will isolate women in times of crisis. We all also know there are more than a few women working ardently to entrench oppression of women. Modern day Schlayflys, if you will. And all the religious nuts. Women have always been the patriarchy’s most vicious enforcers.
This law further pits women against each other in the most terrible way. And now the oppressor side is armed with a nuclear option. The Taliban would be impressed.
All the talk about men getting sued for money if a woman crosses state lines for an abortion will mean that services for women could simply be curtailed. Uber drivers will not accept female passengers in case they’re pregnant. How about proof of non-pregnancy to use public transit? Will pilots refuse to fly female passengers? Will businesses stop hiring women because if you give them 3 days of PTO, they might get an abortion? What about access to financial services?
The way this law is written, a bank can be sued if a woman uses HER OWN MONEY to pay for an abortion. Because they provided the gateway services that made the financial transaction possible.
This law has the means to strip economic agency from women. Of course, the state of Texas and the Supreme Court have clean hands, there’s no state agency here. It’s all civil. It’s also purposely vague, to instill fear and uncertainty in the population. They’ve basically, through trickery and manipulation, set the stage for society to turn against women’s rights and women themselves for economic self preservation.
Evangelical Taliban indeed.
Let’s ask the question again. How is it NOT directed at women? Getting hit from the side or from behind is still getting hit. Doesn’t matter that it’s the attack of a coward, you’re still injured.
If the courts do not push back on this and push back hard, get prepared for a bloodletting. A lot of women are going to die, and not all from back alley abortions. From fear. It’s happened before, many times.
The only real question is whether or not we women are going to take it, AGAIN, or whether we fight back for real this time. We burn, you burn with us because we won’t be slaves again.
Texas women suddenly having commonality with the women of Afghanistan. Most of them don’t even know it yet.
