They're snarling not to make you feel bad but because they cannot abide the same circumstance for themselves. It's an off the cuff, spontaneous reaction. Like if you're a smoker and shove your cigarette/cigar up in someone's face and they don't smoke, they're naturally going to recoil and be disgusted.

That's not because they think you shouldn't be allowed to make your own decisions about smoking, but because they don't want to and don't want it aggressively pushed at them, which has been the historical norm in regards to being servile to men.
