No. It's not a good idea to take responsibility for someone else's happiness. It's not possible as it's only in their control. People who just want to be unhappy are going to find a way with very little effort and there's not a damn thing you can do about it. People struggling with mental illness don't have any more control over their moods than you could have. Happiness is transient anyway, for all of us. We humans are kind of wired for discontent.
So no. It's not your main job in life to keep your mate happy.
The point was to not do things deliberately or out of negligence to make them UNhappy or feel unduly harassed or fatigued, especially over a long period of time.
Of course that goes both ways. It's just the action of the piece followed dating advice passed from grandmother to granddaughter so...
