Your interpretation fails to account for the male on male violence (wars, acts of stupidity, etc) and the genetic inferiority that makes male infants more vulnerable with the end result being that even though statistically more slightly more males are born than females, in the ancient world fewer of them survived to reproduce.
Also, if you have two males and two females on an island you'll most likely end up with a deserted island or a single male survivor. This is because soon or later one of those women will die in childbirth leaving only woman. Then one of those men will get up on his feels and murder the other two or just the woman. Whatever kids there are will starve and die without care. If only the woman was initially killed, the two men will eventually fight and one will be killed by the other. The last man will either die from untended injury or he'll survive long enough to be rescued.
