I can recommend Carroll Quigley's Tragedy & Hope, available for free download online (there's a website that promotes Quigley's work). The first few chapters deal with money, it's creation, history, and governments role in keeping a fair Commons for the exchange od goods and services.

But you're wrong in that the government requires your dependance on money. More like, it's that because that's what everyone else does, it's too hard to trade another way. The power company won't allow you to pay your bill with eggs or pelts, for example, but you're not required to be a customer of the power company, which is a private enterprise not a government owned apparatus, even while it is subsidized by the government.
