Might have been, but family and country no longer help out with that like they did in days gone by. We're no longer in need of massive amounts of births to maintain a population. The vast majority of children survive to adulthood and maternal mortality is no where near where it was pre antibiotics and modern medicine. Further, the planet is over populated.
So that duty no longer exists. If hedonistic thinking helps reduce the population, so be it. That's better for the rest of us, because we're heading for a bottleneck regardless. The greater the thinning before we get there, the more likely we are to get through before extinction is triggered.
