Maybe, but not necessarily. There's exploitation in sewing industry products as well.

Somebody is making that cloth, zippers, buttons, thread, ribbon, interfacing, patterns, rivets, etc.

They're not getting paid an honest wage either. I can't say how it compares to the fashion industry side by side, but I wouldn't assume there's a stark difference.

Plus, lots of times, making your own clothes is more expensive than buying them so you could be shooting yourself in the foot here.

It might actually be better economically and environmentally to buy second hand clothes and use those sewing skills to refashion your clothing.

I follow a young German woman on TikTok who does this. She's incredibly skilled and makes for herself beautiful high fashion clothes of all sorts while keeping her participation in the industry at a minimum.
