It's no longer practical or anywhere near feasible for most couples. It's not even just the money, although that is a main factor. Traditional in the suburbs or city is sheer hell. That deprives women of purpose for the most part. It worked better when income was based on a family farm or Dad went to work, but Mom was still growing and preserving food, making clothes, actively building up community ties, tending livestock, and making money on the side via cottage industry products.
Industrialization devalued all those things in the same way it is now devaluing the traditional work of men.
That's a big part of why they're depressed. They're going through an equivalent of what suburb wives in the 50s went through.
They're going to have to adapt. No dumping this off on women.
