It's likely a bit of both. You make some good points; however, I also believe that you're out of touch with changing demographics, how the young generations are thinking about oppression and what it will mean for them in conjunction with climate change and resource wars. All of these things are interrelated.

There's also the erosion of trust in governments, leadership, media, etc. They've been caught in too many lies and too much corruption for too many years with too few consequences. That has a profound effect on a population.

Think about whether those fissures capable of exploitation would even meaningful exist if real and meaningful accountability were the norm instead of the exception.
