It's a useless statement. The problem here is that "economically viable" is entirely dependent upon perspective of both parties, can be evaluated in an endless variety of ways, and is NOT just a function of having money.
Yet the idea of women needing and wanting some economic stability in order to invest the TWENTY or so years required to birth and rear young is too often used as a cudgel to make men feel like they don't measure up to some standard that doesn't exist and bash women for being "grasping, greedy, and not giving men a chance".
It's a useless phrase in every way exceot to put men and women against each other in order to make money off their pain and in some cases to control them.
