I'm guessing the rationale was either the belief that women don't choose 'good' men so they need someone who's not dickmstized to choose for them, like a friend.

Or, they're tryinf ronsraw women back by offering an option to labor dump the unpleasant task of wading through the cesspool to find a suitable match. Still says volumes about what the designers think about women though, doesn't it?
