In his case, it was more likely the abuse of power/position than the fact that he cheated on a sick wife.

If he had had that affair with any woman outside his church, it's unlikely the response would have been the same. Most certainly it would have been milder, there wouldn't have been sanctions most likely, at worst a very mild slap on the wrists.
