I'm not so sure. Before I get started here, let me say upfront that I haven't yet looked into the gritty details of this case yet. I haven't been able to. So I'm not well versed on the particulars. I only know what I've seen on TikTok and here and a few snippets of news articles.
But.
These were average guys. The you gest was in his early 20s, the oldest was in his 70s. They had average jobs. They lived average lives. Many were married and had children. One was litetally a next door neighbor.
I had thought that this website had to have been either a kind dating site or dark web. But you're calling it a chat room. And the excuses some of these men gave makes it clear they had to be talked into a little bit, which suggests they weren't on a kink dating site or dark web because you go to thiee places with intent. You're there for a reason, generally.
Mind you, it didn't take much convincing. Not a single one of these guys, based on their interviews with the police, was thinking with their more elevated head.
This WAS the "if you're alone in the woods would you rather encounter a random man or a random bear" scenario. Think about it. An opportunity to have your way with a woman and do whatever you want with no consequences or risk so reduced, it's worth the gamble.
And we see that the men did not "help" her, they used her body to gratify themselves.
And that's why we choose the bear.
Also, it's not reasonable to say that the majority of men wouldn't do this. The real life case suggests otherwise.
It's a small town. 7000 people. Half of whom are women, roughly. 72 men are being charged but we know that there were more. 90 to 100, last I saw.
I don't know if all the men are from the town, but they must be fairly local to come over one night and then go back to their lives and families and not he missed.
About 17% of France's population is under 25. Just looked that up.
So somewhere shy of 100 men out of 2900 raped this woman once that golden opportunity presented itself.
But wait. Not all 2900 had knowledge of that chat room where the opportunity occurred. How many did?
That's your percentage of how many men would easily and happily rape a woman and then defend what they did given the opportunity.
The fewer people who were in that chat, the higher the percentage.
Are we still comfortable saying "the vast majority of men would never" because it sure as he'll doesn't look like it.
And that's why we pick the bear.
