I'm going to have to agree to disagree with you here.

I've worked my share of low paid jobs too both right out of high school, reentering the workforce after having a child and after moving while I found employment in my field.

It's changed. You were expected to deal with acerbic, unhappy customers. The occasional sexual misconduct/harassment/ assault customer. Mad moms. That kind of thing.

Nobody got shot because there was no caramel creamer for your coffee. Getting screamed at, spittle flying, over inane things beyond your control wasn't a daily occurence. You weren't expected to do the job of 3 people for the same pay. You weren't expected to stay on overtime for extended periods. You weren't expected to work double shifts because someone else didn't show up, the place was usually staffed with enough people to cover the shortage. There was a time you were expected to stay home if you were sick rather than serve food to the public.

There was the occasional murder, usually gas station/convenience store clerks. The murders were always decried and considered heinous. Justice was demanded.

They weren't treated as a part of the cost of doing business. Or another fun day at work.

Things have changed.
