It works how all our decisions do, both individually and collectively.

Generally speaking however, the criteria for whether or not an opinion is worthy of respect is going to rest on known or suspected outcome of harm of that opinion and who's getting hurt.

For example, you may be of the opinion that apples are better than oranges. I may vehemently disagree with that because I'm team oranges all the way. But I'm not being harmed by your opinion about apples, you're not being harmed, nobody's being harmed by your opinion about apples.

So I can respect your opinion about apples even if I personally would not eat an apple if you paid me because I hate them that much.

(Just an example, I don't hate apples).

You might be of the opinion that there were some net positives to slavery for Black people. Adter allz they got to come over to America and learn some valuable trades that they didn't otherwise have. They were taken care of by their families so long as they behaved themselves and they no longer had to struggle to live like in Africa. The current Governor of Florida shares this opinion and he's sharing it along with some other people.

But this opinion is mean spirited and callous. It's lacking in humanity. It's a bullshit lie through and through. It harms my friends my community, and a sizeable and important part of my nation.

I categorically REFUSE to respect this opinion and I'd like to see you try to make me. I don't have to be the one actively being harmed by Ron DeDumbAss's opinion to see it for what it is. A justification for genocide and atrocities against our fellow human beings.

You and I might be on a date where you find yourself forming the opinion that since you bought me dinner I owe you sex. Once again we find ourselves in a situation where your opinion is an imminent threat to my health, safety, and wellbeing. Your opinion here will lead me to an opinion of my own. That if you don't get your hands off me, I'm going to knock your nuts so far up your abdominal cavity the only way to get them out will be through your eye sockets. Your follow up opinion may be that it's incredibly unfeminine of me to choose violence just because you had a opinion I didn't particularly like. And my next opinion will be that I don't give a rat's ass about any of your opinions because they are unworthy of my respect.

See how opinions work? Not every opinion is worthy of respect. Some people just have bad opinions that cause harm.
