I'm about the same age as June. When we were teens, there was a lot of talk about "penis envy". This was a big idea so I believe it was pretty widespread, even internationally.

In retrospect, I see it as a means of shaming or pushback against teen girls flexing their wings against the status quo.

Here in the US, we (GenX) were the first cohort of girls to grow up with all rights that enfranchise a person as an equal citizen. The right to reproductive healthcare including birth control and termination of unwanted or dangerous pregnancies having been established by Roe and the right to access to financial institutions having been granted by the Equal Opportunity Credit Act. Both those hurdles came about in the early/mid 70s when we were toddlers.

You'd get these comments from the "adults" but teenage boys picked up on it too and then it took on a life of it's own.

I get where she's coming from. Degradation of the female body and elevation of male virility is a main component in establishing the construct of male superiority.

Teen girls don't self harm in various ways for the shits and giggles. They dinit because they loathe their own bodies.

It will be interesting to see the results from the first generation to grow up with body positivity. The backlash to that has been pretty wild this far too.
