If you read through the Patriarchy section of the bible, starting with Genesis chapter 12 (I believe) you find that God’s chosen often show major character flaws and moral failings that lead to death, despair, and pain among the people tied to them.
Still, they are the blessed. The chosen. The line through which God’s promise will be fulfilled.
This fact should help explain the mental gymnastics at play here among the faithful.
It allows them to accept corruption among leaders (spiritual and political) because God’s promises are fulfilled to those who stay faithful to the chosen, not those who question. They convince themselves that whatever these leaders do is necessary to get them to where they need to be to fulfill God’s will. So it’s worth it in the end. No matter who it hurts or kills. I’m the end, we’re all expendable to the completion of God’s plan.
Read through the books of Kings (maybe right before Kings) and you find that mankind asked God to allow them to choose a King. God tried to talk people out of it but they insisted. So He admonished them that if they insisted, He would allow it but would no longer take part in Human affairs in the same way nor would He dwell amongst the people. Whatever calamity befell us due to poor leadership decisions was on us and us alone.
Churches never seem to talk about the books of Kings. They often preach the importance of obedience to God and leaders as the emissaries of God.
Wonder why that is?
