I'd say they're most often portrayed that way because our myths and stories must reflect the world we live in. We live in a dominance hierarchy, thus the rise of and popularity of the heroe's journey.

We've started breaking out of that though. Wicked is a good example. The development of the heroine's journey is another.

And we all see who's losing their shit over it too.
