I wouldn't know what to recommend. Mostly, I find them funny, thats because a lot of them are ghost written by men so thr women in them are all too often paper dolls.
It's a double edged sword. The protagonist must be bland and common enough that the audience can insert themselves into the story and relate in the way that the protagonist is relating, more or less. But male writers still Stepford factory their female characters far too much.
Likewise, the males are completely unbelievable, which is a huge reason why they're so desireable. There are a LOT of fantasies born of female trauma in those characters.
I actually don't know of any good romance novels where the protagonist is the male that are not gay novels. I'm sure they're out there, I just haven't seen them. I think that's something that needs to be balanced out.
