I thought Mayan was a dead language too, until several years ago when the Mayan calendar hysteria had a moment.

That's cool that you and your students have an opportunity to learn some of that language. That's actually a precious gift, especially considering the Mayans were so advanced. Their floating gardens were really something. Quite impressive.
