I know what you mean. Sometimes it takes a bit of back and forth to fully work out meaning. But that's why we have a comment section, no?

Penguin is generally knowledgeable on American history, seems more knowledgeable than many Americans, sadly. Also obsessed with American culture, but only parts. I don't think they reakly get how huge religious culture is here in parts of the US, or how much regional influences play into culture and our divisions.

Seems like Penguin is not as versed in modern political happenings here, which is fine. Most Americans are doing really well if they know the broad strokes of Brexit or Greek austerity, the Ukraine war, or, or, or. You get my drift. And with Brexit being the unmitigated disaster it's reported to be, it's only natural they would focus morenon that. It's more relevant to them.

I think, lots of times, maybe their writing in American issues is a distraction from what's going on there. That's fine too. Predicaments you can't do anything or much about are only tolerable with the occasional distraction and we do seem hell bent on making excellent punching bags of ourselves, don't we?
