I hear this said a lot, mostly by men but I don’t know that I buy it. Being single for men is just as likely to be celebrated and revered in media. Most of what I hear on the ground is a kind of envy or interest for dating, not derision or scorn.

There are no slurs for single men like “old maid". There are no sayings either like “it’s the over particular ones that get left behind and turn mean as second skimmings".

Yeah. So I’m not really buying this. I think it’s more how they feel themselves than any kind of real societal treatment of their status.
