I have to call bullshit here too. There is a simple solution. Consistently following through with consequences, consistently modelling respectful behavior toward your charge such that they will accept you as leader, consistently giving and earning trust.

Kids need and want what they've always needed and wanted. They haven't changed. Provide them with that and they will respond a certain way, don't and they'll respond a different, more unpleasant way.

All relationships, no matter what kind, are built off of time and trust. Kids are no exception. Invest in those things with integrity and you'll be fine. Don't, and you'll get the mirrored value you did put in.
