I don't think that's a default setting of human nature. I believe it's a direct result of the social structure.

A look at the few surviving hunter/gatherer tribes is direct evidence of this. They're not obsessed with status and will mock anyone who starts getting a big head and putting on airs because it's perceived as a direct threat to community cohesion.

They live more egalitarian lives and less dominance hierarchy.
